RESUMO

Electroencephalography (EEG) captures minute electrical signals emanating from the brain. These signals are vulnerable to interference from external noise and dynamic artifacts; hence, accurately recording such signals is challenging. Although dry electrodes are convenient, their signals are of limited quality; consequently, wet electrodes are predominantly used in EEG. Therefore, developing dry electrodes for accurately and stably recording EEG signals is crucial. In this study, we developed flexible dry electrodes using polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)/carbon-nanotube (CNT) composites with isotropically wrinkled surfaces that effectively combine the advantages of wet and dry electrodes. Adjusting the PDMS crosslinker ratio led to good adhesion, resulting in a highly adhesive CNT/PDMS composite with a low Young's modulus that exhibited excellent electrical and mechanical properties owing to its ability to conformally contact skin. The isotropically wrinkled surface also effectively controls dynamic artifacts during EEG signal detection and ensures accurate signal analysis. The results of this study demonstrate that dry electrodes based on flexible CNT/PDMS composites and corrugated structures can outperform wet electrodes. The introduction of such electrodes is expected to enable the accurate analysis and monitoring of EEG signals in various scenarios, including clinical trials.

BACKGROUND: The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has significantly strained global healthcare, particularly in the management of patients requiring mechanical ventilation (MV) and continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT). This study investigated the characteristics and prognoses of these patients. METHODS: This multicenter retrospective cohort study gathered data from patients with COVID-19 across 26 medical centers. Logistic analysis was used to identify the factors associated with CRRT implementation. RESULTS: Of the 640 patients with COVID-19 who required MV, 123 (19.2%) underwent CRRT. Compared to the non-CRRT group, the CRRT group was older and exhibited higher sequential organ failure assessment scores. The incidence of hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, chronic neurological disease, and chronic kidney disease was also higher in the CRRT group. Moreover, the CRRT group had higher intensive care unit (ICU) (75.6% vs. 26.9%, p < 0.001) and in-hospital (79.7% vs. 29.6%, p < 0.001) mortality rates. CRRT implementation was identified as an independent risk factor for both ICU mortality (hazard ratio [HR]:1.833, 95% confidence interval [CI]:1.342-2.505, p < 0.001) and in-hospital mortality (HR: 2.228, 95% CI: 1.648-3.014, p < 0.001). Refractory respiratory failure (n = 99, 19.1%) was the most common cause of death in the non-CRRT death group, and shock with multi-organ failure (n = 50, 40.7%) was the most common cause of death in the CRRT death group. Shock with multi-organ failure and cardiac death were significantly more common in the CRRT death group, compared to non-CRRT death group. CONCLUSION: This study indicates that CRRT is associated with higher ICU and in-hospital mortality rates in patients with COVID-19 who require MV. Notably, the primary cause of death in the CRRT group was shock with multi-organ failure, emphasizing the severe clinical course for these patients, while refractory respiratory failure was most common in non-CRRT patients.

BACKGROUND: Successful liberation from mechanical ventilation is one of the most crucial processes in critical care because it is the first step by which a respiratory failure patient begins to transition out of the intensive care unit and return to their own life. Therefore, when devising appropriate strategies for removing mechanical ventilation, it is essential to consider not only the individual experiences of healthcare professionals, but also scientific and systematic approaches. Recently, numerous studies have investigated methods and tools for identifying when mechanically ventilated patients are ready to breathe on their own. The Korean Society of Critical Care Medicine therefore provides these recommendations to clinicians about liberation from the ventilator. METHODS: Meta-analyses and comprehensive syntheses were used to thoroughly review, compile, and summarize the complete body of relevant evidence. All studies were meticulously assessed using the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) method, and the outcomes were presented succinctly as evidence profiles. Those evidence syntheses were discussed by a multidisciplinary committee of experts in mechanical ventilation, who then developed and approved recommendations. RESULTS: Recommendations for nine PICO (population, intervention, comparator, and outcome) questions about ventilator liberation are presented in this document. This guideline includes seven conditional recommendations, one expert consensus recommendation, and one conditional deferred recommendation. CONCLUSIONS: We developed these clinical guidelines for mechanical ventilation liberation to provide meaningful recommendations. These guidelines reflect the best treatment for patients seeking liberation from mechanical ventilation.

BACKGROUND: Limited data are available on the mortality rates of patients receiving extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). We aimed to analyze the relationship between COVID-19 and clinical outcomes for patients receiving ECMO. METHODS: We retrospectively investigated patients with COVID-19 pneumonia requiring ECMO in 19 hospitals across Korea from January 1, 2020 to August 31, 2021. The primary outcome was the 90-day mortality after ECMO initiation. We performed multivariate analysis using a logistic regression model to estimate the odds ratio (OR) of 90-day mortality. Survival differences were analyzed using the Kaplan-Meier (KM) method. RESULTS: Of 127 patients with COVID-19 pneumonia who received ECMO, 70 patients (55.1%) died within 90 days of ECMO initiation. The median age was 64 years, and 63% of patients were male. The incidence of ECMO was increased with age but was decreased after 70 years of age. However, the survival rate was decreased linearly with age. In multivariate analysis, age (OR, 1.048; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.010-1.089; P = 0.014) and receipt of continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) (OR, 3.069; 95% CI, 1.312-7.180; P = 0.010) were significantly associated with an increased risk of 90-day mortality. KM curves showed significant differences in survival between groups according to age (65 years) (log-rank P = 0.021) and receipt of CRRT (log-rank P = 0.004). CONCLUSION: Older age and receipt of CRRT were associated with higher mortality rates among patients with COVID-19 who received ECMO.

BACKGROUND: The understanding of shock indices in patients with septic shock is limited, and their values may vary depending on cardiac function. METHODS: This prospective cohort study was conducted across 20 university-affiliated hospitals (21 intensive care units [ICUs]). Adult patients (≥19 years) with septic shock admitted to the ICUs during a 29-month period were included. The shock index (SI), diastolic shock index (DSI), modified shock index (MSI), and age shock index (Age-SI) were calculated at sepsis recognition (time zero) and ICU admission. Left ventricular (LV) function was categorized as either normal LV ejection fraction (LVEF ≥ 50%) or decreased LVEF (<50%). RESULTS: Among the 1,194 patients with septic shock, 392 (32.8%) who underwent echocardiography within 24 h of time zero were included in the final analysis (normal LVEF: n = 246; decreased LVEF: n = 146). In patients with normal LVEF, only survivors demonstrated significant improvement in SI, DSI, MSI, and Age-SI values from time zero to ICU admission; however, no notable improvements were found in all patients with decreased LVEF. The completion of vasopressor or fluid bundle components was significantly associated with improved indices in patients with normal LVEF, but not in those with decreased LVEF. In multivariable analysis, each of the four indices at ICU admission was significantly associated with in-hospital mortality (P < 0.05) among patients with normal LVEF; however, discrimination power was better in the indices for patients with lower lactate levels (≤ 4.0 mmol/L), compared to those with higher lactate levels. CONCLUSIONS: The SI, DSI, MSI, and Age-SI at ICU admission were significantly associated with in-hospital mortality in patients with septic shock and normal LVEF, which was not found in those with decreased LVEF. Our study emphasizes the importance of interpreting shock indices in the context of LV function in septic shock.

BACKGROUND: Mechanical power (MP) has been reported to be associated with clinical outcomes. Because the original MP equation is derived from paralyzed patients under volume-controlled ventilation, its application in practice could be limited in patients receiving pressure-controlled ventilation (PCV). Recently, a simplified equation for patients under PCV was developed. We investigated the association between MP and intensive care unit (ICU) mortality. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of Korean data from the Fourth International Study of Mechanical Ventilation. We extracted data of patients under PCV on day 1 and calculated MP using the following simplified equation: MPPCV = 0.098 ∙ respiratory rate ∙ tidal volume ∙ (ΔPinsp + positive end-expiratory pressure), where ΔPinsp is the change in airway pressure during inspiration. Patients were divided into survivors and non-survivors and then compared. Multivariable logistic regression was performed to determine association between MPPCV and ICU mortality. The interaction of MPPCV and use of neuromuscular blocking agent (NMBA) was also analyzed. RESULTS: A total of 125 patients was eligible for final analysis, of whom 38 died in the ICU. MPPCV was higher in non-survivors (17.6 vs. 26.3 J/min, P<0.001). In logistic regression analysis, only MPPCV was significantly associated with ICU mortality (odds ratio, 1.090; 95% confidence interval, 1.029-1.155; P=0.003). There was no significant effect of the interaction between MPPCV and use of NMBA on ICU mortality (P=0.579). CONCLUSIONS: MPPCV is associated with ICU mortality in patients mechanically ventilated with PCV mode, regardless of NMBA use.

Vegetable drinks offer a convenient way to increase the daily intake of vegetables containing vitamins, antioxidants, and fiber. In this study, we discovered that mungbean milk serves as a carbohydrate source during fermentation using lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and enhances the nutritional value of vegetable yoghurt. Mungbean milk reduces pH while titratable acidity increases faster than soybean milk during fermentation. M0S, Soybean milk 100% with added sucrose exhibited the highest titratable acidity after 16 h of fermentation. The acetic acid content of all samples did not show significant changes during fermentation, but the lactic acid content increased. Proximate analysis showed no significant change during fermentation, regardless of the fermentation time and mixing ratio of mungbean to soybean milk. The sucrose content of samples except M0S decreased after 16 h of fermentation. Mungbean milk exhibited high antioxidant activity both before and after fermentation, while M0S showed the lowest antioxidant activity. The results of this study demonstrated the potential application of mungbean milk to improve fermented vegetable drinks using LAB functionally. Fermented mungbean milk yoghurt can be a valuable addition to a healthy and balanced diet for those who consume plant-based diets.

This study focuses on the development of a scalable method for producing poly(3-hydroxypropionate), a homopolymer with significant physico-mechanical properties, through the use of metabolically-engineered Escherichia coli K12 (MG1655) and externally supplied 3-hydroxypropionate. The polymer synthesis pathway was established and optimized through synthetic biology techniques, including the effects of overexpressing phasin and cell division proteins. The optimized strain achieved unprecedented production titers of 9.5 g/L in flask cultures and 80 g/L in fed-batch bioreactors within 45 h. The analysis of poly(3-hydroxypropionate) polymer properties revealed it possesses excellent elasticity (Young's modulus < 6 MPa) and tensile strength (∼80 MPa), positioning it within the category of elastomers or flexible plastics. These findings suggest a viable path for the sustainable, large-scale production of the poly(3-hydroxypropionate) biopolymer.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the risk of cardiovascular disease associated with long-term use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in a large real-world ankylosing spondylitis (AS) cohort. METHODS: This nationwide population-based cohort study used data from the Korean National Health Insurance Database. Patients aged ≥18 years old who were newly diagnosed with AS without prior cardiovascular disease between January 2010 and December 2018 were included in this study. Controls without AS were randomly selected by age, sex, and index year. The primary outcome was cardiovascular disease, a composite outcome of ischemic heart disease, stroke, or congestive heart failure. Long-term use of NSAIDs was defined as use of NSAIDs for >365 cumulative defined daily doses. The association between long-term use of NSAIDs and incident cardiovascular disease was examined in both AS and non-AS populations. RESULTS: Among 19 775 patients with AS and 59 325 matched controls without AS, there were 1,663 and 4,308 incident cases of cardiovascular disease, showing an incidence of 16.9 and 13.8 per 1,000 person-years, respectively. Long-term use of NSAIDs was associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease in non-AS controls (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR], 1.64; 95% CI, 1.48-1.82). In contrast, long-term use of NSAIDs did not increase the risk of cardiovascular disease in AS patients (aHR, 1.06; 95% CI, 0.94-1.20; adjusted for age, sex, socioeconomic status, body mass index, smoking status, hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, and tumor necrosis factor inhibitor use). CONCLUSION: Prolonged NSAID treatment in AS patients may not be as harmful as in the general population regarding cardiovascular risk.

BACKGROUND: Bone marrow adiposity and R2* have been explored as an imaging biomarker for osteoporosis. Chemical shift-encoded MRI (CSE-MRI) is a method that allows for relatively accurate measurement of adiposity and R2* in bone marrow in a simple manner. Additionally, there are reports of a physiological gradient of fat distribution in the lumbar spine. This physiological gradient of fat distribution can potentially impact the prediction of osteoporosis. Furthermore, the distribution of R2* is not well understood. PURPOSE: This study examined how lumbar spine fat fraction (FF) and R2* change with different levels of the lumbar spine, how they influence osteoporosis prediction, and how they change according to measurement methods. STUDY DESIGN/SETTING: Cross-sectional study using retrospectively collected data. PATIENT SAMPLE: The study included patients who underwent dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and lumbar spine CSE-MRI within one-month intervals between 2017 and 2022. OUTCOME MEASURES: Reproducibility of FF and R2* based on measurement techniques, changes in FF and R2* according to vertebral level and osteoporosis status, and diagnostic power of osteoporosis based on vertebral level. METHODS: Patients were categorized into the normal bone density, osteopenia, and osteoporosis groups based on bone mineral density. The relationship between groups and spine level before and after BMD adjustment was investigated using generalized estimating equations. Comparisons between the three groups and various measures of reliability were conducted using intraclass correlation coefficient. The diagnostic performance for predicting osteoporosis was evaluated with a receiver operating characteristic curve. RESULTS: Comparing the three groups, FF increased with osteoporosis severity, while R2* decreased (p<.001). The intra/inter-rater agreement for FF and R2* was excellent. A physiological gradient within individuals was observed, where FF increased towards the lower lumbar spine (p=.002). R2* tended to decrease, but it was not statistically significant (p=.218). There was no statistically significant difference in the diagnosis of osteoporosis based on FF or R2* across different lumbar spine levels. CONCLUSIONS: There was an increase in FF and a decrease in R2* from T12 to L5. However, the predictive power of osteoporosis did not significantly differ between each level.

The lactic acid bacterium Limosilactobacillus reuteri (formerly Lactobacillus reuteri) is a desirable host for the production of 1,3-propanediol (1,3-PDO) from glycerol when 1,3-PDO is used in the food or cosmetic industry. However, the production is hindered by strain instability, causing cell lysis, and difficult gene manipulation. This study reveals that the stability of L. reuteri DSM 20016 and its 1,3-PDO production, especially in the alcohol dehydrogenases (ADHs)-deletion mutants, are greatly enhanced after the deletion of two prophages (Φ3 and Φ4) present in the L. reuteri's chromosome. The resulting phage-free and ADHs-deletion mutant could produce >825 mM 1,3-PDO in 48 h without cell lysis at the theoretical maximum yield on glucose of ~2 mol/mol. Compared to the wild-type strain, the mutant exhibited a 45.2% increase in 1,3-PDO production titer and a 2.1-fold increase in yield. In addition, this study reports that the transformation efficiency of L. reuteri Δadh2Δadh6 mutant strains were greatly enhanced by >300-fold after the deletion of prophage Φ3, probably due to the removal of a restriction-modification (RM) system which resides in the phage genome. With improved stability and higher transformation efficiency, recombinant L. reuteri DSM 20016 Δadh2Δadh6ΔΦ3ΔΦ4 can be a more reliable and amenable host for industrial applications.

BACKGROUND: Results of studies investigating the association between body mass index (BMI) and mortality in patients with coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) have been conflicting. METHODS: This multicenter, retrospective observational study, conducted between January 2020 and August 2021, evaluated the impact of obesity on outcomes in patients with severe COVID-19 in a Korean national cohort. A total of 1,114 patients were enrolled from 22 tertiary referral hospitals or university-affiliated hospitals, of whom 1,099 were included in the analysis, excluding 15 with unavailable height and weight information. The effect(s) of BMI on patients with severe COVID-19 were analyzed. RESULTS: According to the World Health Organization BMI classification, 59 patients were underweight, 541 were normal, 389 were overweight, and 110 were obese. The overall 28-day mortality rate was 15.3%, and there was no significant difference according to BMI. Univariate Cox analysis revealed that BMI was associated with 28-day mortality (hazard ratio, 0.96; p=0.045), but not in the multivariate analysis. Additionally, patients were divided into two groups based on BMI ≥25 kg/m2 and underwent propensity score matching analysis, in which the two groups exhibited no significant difference in mortality at 28 days. The median (interquartile range) clinical frailty scale score at discharge was higher in nonobese patients (3 [3 to 5] vs. 4 [3 to 6], p<0.001). The proportion of frail patients at discharge was significantly higher in the nonobese group (28.1% vs. 46.8%, p<0.001). CONCLUSION: The obesity paradox was not evident in this cohort of patients with severe COVID-19. However, functional outcomes at discharge were better in the obese group.

The discovery of formate dehydrogenase (Me-FDH1) from Methylorubrum extorquens has provided an avenue for sustainable CO2 fixation and utilization. However, the mass production of Me-FDH1 is challenging due to the presence of its unique tungsto-bis-metalopterin guanine dinucleotide (W-bis-MGD) cofactor, limiting its practical applications. In this study, C. necator H16 is proposed as a host for the large-scale production of Me-FDH1, utilizing fructose as a carbon source and its inherent machinery for cofactor synthesis. In a minimal salt medium, C. necator H16 could produce active Me-FDH1, which exhibited a specific activity of 80 to 100 U/mg for CO2 conversion to formate. In fed batch bioreactor experiments, approximately 50 g CDW/L (cell dry weight/L) and 10,000 U/L Me-FDH1 were achieved within 50 h. This study highlights C. necator H16 as the recombinant host for Me-FDH1, paving the way for the future development of efficient mass-production methods for this crucial enzyme.

BACKGROUND: Data regarding the clinical effects of bacteremia on severe community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) are limited. Thus, we investigated clinical characteristics and outcomes of severe CAP patients with bacteremia compared with those of subjects without bacteremia. In addition, we evaluated clinical factors associated with bacteremia at the time of sepsis awareness. METHODS: We enrolled sepsis patients diagnosed with CAP at emergency departments (EDs) from an ongoing nationwide multicenter observational registry, the Korean Sepsis Alliance, between September 2019 and December 2020. For evaluation of clinical factors associated with bacteremia, we divided eligible patients into bacteremia and non-bacteremia groups, and logistic regression analysis was performed using the clinical characteristics at the time of sepsis awareness. RESULT: During the study period, 1,510 (47.9%) sepsis patients were caused by CAP, and bacteremia was identified in 212 (14.0%) patients. Septic shock occurred more frequently in the bacteremia group than in the non-bacteremia group (27.4% vs. 14.8%; p < 0.001). In multivariable analysis, hematologic malignancies and septic shock were associated with an increased risk of bacteremia. However, chronic lung disease was associated with a decreased risk of bacteremia. Hospital mortality was significantly higher in the bacteremia group than in the non-bacteremia group (27.3% vs. 40.6%, p < 0.001). The most prevalent pathogen in blood culture was Klebsiella pneumoniae followed by Escherichia coli in gram-negative pathogens. CONCLUSION: The incidence of bacteremia in severe CAP was low at 14.0%, but the occurrence of bacteremia was associated with increased hospital mortality. In severe CAP, hematologic malignancies and septic shock were associated with an increased risk of bacteremia.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: While endomyocardial biopsy (EMB) is recommended in adult patients with fulminant myocarditis, the clinical impact of its timing is still unclear. METHODS: Data were collected from 419 adult patients with clinically suspected fulminant myocarditis admitted to intensive care units across 36 tertiary centres in 15 countries worldwide. The diagnosis of myocarditis was histologically proven in 210 (50%) patients, either by EMB (n = 183, 44%) or by autopsy/explanted heart examination (n = 27, 6%), and clinically suspected cardiac magnetic resonance imaging confirmed in 96 (23%) patients. The primary outcome of survival free of heart transplantation (HTx) or left ventricular assist device (LVAD) at 1 year was specifically compared between patients with early EMB (within 2 days after intensive care unit admission, n = 103) and delayed EMB (n = 80). A propensity score-weighted analysis was done to control for confounders. RESULTS: Median age on admission was 40 (29-52) years, and 322 (77%) patients received temporary mechanical circulatory support. A total of 273 (65%) patients survived without HTx/LVAD. The primary outcome was significantly different between patients with early and delayed EMB (70% vs. 49%, P = .004). After propensity score weighting, the early EMB group still significantly differed from the delayed EMB group in terms of survival free of HTx/LVAD (63% vs. 40%, P = .021). Moreover, early EMB was independently associated with a lower rate of death or HTx/LVAD at 1 year (odds ratio of 0.44; 95% confidence interval: 0.22-0.86; P = .016). CONCLUSIONS: Endomyocardial biopsy should be broadly and promptly used in patients admitted to the intensive care unit for clinically suspected fulminant myocarditis.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to evaluate whether the effect of tachycardia varies according to the degree of tissue perfusion in septic shock. METHODS: Patients with septic shock admitted to the intensive care units were categorized into the tachycardia (heart rate > 100 beats/min) and non-tachycardia (≤ 100 beats/min) groups. The association of tachycardia with hospital mortality was evaluated in each subgroup with low and high lactate levels, which were identified through a subpopulation treatment effect pattern plot analysis. RESULTS: In overall patients, hospital mortality did not differ between the two groups (44.6% vs. 41.8%, P = 0.441), however, tachycardia was associated with reduced hospital mortality rates in patients with a lactate level ≥ 5.3 mmol/L (48.7% vs. 60.3%, P = 0.030; adjusted odds ratio [OR], 0.59, 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.35-0.99, P = 0.045), not in patients with a lactate level < 5.3 mmol/L (36.5% vs. 29.7%, P = 0.156; adjusted OR, 1.39, 95% CI, 0.82-2.35, P = 0.227). CONCLUSION: In septic shock patients, the effect of tachycardia on hospital mortality differed by serum lactate level. Tachycardia was associated with better survival in patients with significantly elevated lactate levels.

Background: Investigations of the impact of sepsis on the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status (ECOG PS) of fully ambulatory patients are scarce. Methods: This is a retrospective analysis of prospectively collected nationwide data on septic patients recruited from 19 hospitals of the Korean Sepsis Alliance between August 2019 and December 2020. Adult septic patients with good ECOG PS (i.e., 0 or 1) before sepsis were enrolled in this study. The change in ECOG PS and the prevalence of disability (ECOG PS ≥2) at hospital discharge were recorded. Results: Of the 4,145 septic patients, 1,735 (41.9%) patients who had ECOG PS of 0 or 1 before sepsis and eventually survived to discharge were selected. After treatment for sepsis, the ECOG PS deteriorated in 514 (29.6%) patients; 376 (21.7%) patients had poor ECOG PS (i.e., ≥2) at hospital discharge. The proportion of patients with poor ECOG PS at hospital discharge increased with increases in the initial sequential organ failure assessment (SOFA) score and lactate level. Furthermore, poor ECOG PS at hospital discharge was found in young patients (aged <65 years, 17.4%), those with no history of cancer (18.2%) or with low comorbidities [Charlson comorbidity index (CCI) ≤2; 13.6%], and those without septic shock (19.9%). In multivariable analysis, age, solid cancer, immunocompromised condition, SOFA score, mechanical ventilation, and use of inappropriate empirical antibiotics (odds ratio: 1.786; 95% confidence interval: 1.151-2.771) were significant risk factors for poor ECOG PS. Conclusions: One in five septic patients who were fully ambulatory before sepsis were not functionally independent at hospital discharge. Incomplete functional recovery was also seen in a substantial proportion of younger patients, those with low comorbidities, and those without septic shock. However, the adequacy of empirical antibiotics may improve the functional status in such patients.

Although Sn has been intensively studied as one of the most promising anode materials to replace commercialized graphite, its cycling and rate performances are still unsatisfactory owing to the insufficient control of its large volume change during cycling and poor electrochemical kinetics. Herein, we propose a Sn-TiO2-C ternary composite as a promising anode material to overcome these limitations. The hybrid TiO2-C matrix synthesized via two-step high-energy ball milling effectively regulated the irreversible lithiation/delithiation of the active Sn electrode and facilitated Li-ion diffusion. At the appropriate C concentration, Sn-TiO2-C exhibited significantly enhanced cycling performance and rate capability compared with its counterparts (Sn-TiO2 and Sn-C). Sn-TiO2-C delivers good reversible specific capacities (669 mAh g-1 after 100 cycles at 200 mA g-1 and 651 mAh g-1 after 500 cycles at 500 mA g-1) and rate performance (446 mAh g-1 at 3000 mA g-1). The superiority of Sn-TiO2-C over Sn-TiO2 and Sn-C was corroborated with electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, which revealed faster Li-ion diffusion kinetics in the presence of the hybrid TiO2-C matrix than in the presence of TiO2 or C alone. Therefore, Sn-TiO2-C is a potential anode for next-generation Li-ion batteries.

1,3-Butanediol (1,3-BDO) finds versatile applications in the cosmetic, chemical, and food industries. This study focuses on the metabolic engineering of Escherichia coli K12 to achieve efficient production of 1,3-BDO from glucose via acetoacetyl-CoA, 3-hydroxybutyryl-CoA, and 3-hydroxybutyraldehyde. The accumulation of an intermediary metabolite (pyruvate) and a byproduct (3-hydroxybutyric acid) was reduced by disruption of the negative transcription factor (PdhR) for pyruvate dehydrogenase complex (PDHc) and employing an efficient alcohol dehydrogenase (YjgB), respectively. Additionally, to improve NADPH availability, carbon flux was redirected from the Embden-Meyerhof-Parnas (EMP) pathway to the Entner-Doudoroff (ED) pathway. One resulting strain achieved a record-high titer of 790 mM (∼71.1 g/L) with a yield of 0.65 mol/mol for optically pure (R)-1,3-BDO, with an enantiomeric excess (e.e.) value of 98.5 %. These findings are useful in the commercial production of 1,3-BDO and provide valuable insights into the development of an efficient cell factory for other acetyl-CoA derivatives.

Dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) is widely used modality for measuring bone mineral density (BMD). DXA is used to measure the quantitative areal BMD of bone, but has the disadvantage of not reflecting the bone architecture. To compensate for this disadvantage, trabecular bone score (TBS), a qualitative parameter of trabecular microarchitecture, is used. Meanwhile, there have been recent attempts to diagnose osteoporosis using the Hounsfield unit (HU) from CT and MR-based proton density fat fraction (PDFF) measurements. In our study, we aimed to find out the correlation between HU/PDFF and BMD/TBS, and whether osteoporosis can be diagnosed through HU/PDFF. Our study revealed that the HU value showed a moderate to good positive correlation with BMD and TBS. PDFF showed a fair negative correlation with BMD and TBS. In diagnosing osteopenia and osteoporosis, the HU value showed good performance, whereas the PDFF showed fair performance. In conclusion, both HU values and PDFF can play a role in predicting BMD and TBS. Both HU values and PDFF can be used to predict osteoporosis; further, CT is expected to show better results.
